Met Gala 2012: The Best and Worst

Forget the Oscars, Golden Globes, The People's Choice Awards and the Grammys, New York's annual Met Gala (or if you're gonna be a formal about it, The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala) is the best red carpet all year. It sets the standard for Red Carpets to come and makes other Red Carpets weep in envy.
Each year the gala (great word, right?) chooses one or two iconic fashion designers and deconstructs their life's work. It also gives celebs of all stripes the opportunity to break out the newest in Red Carpet gowns, to mingle with ACTUAL fashion designers and try to prove their couture cred. It also gives the occasional actress a chance to fail spectacularly — I'm lookin' at you Elizabeth Banks:
Trends on the carpet included lots of see-through (Beyonce, Marion Cotillard); black, done well (Rihanna) and black done badly (Mary-Kate Olsen) and black done boring (Cate Blanchett); a trend toward orange hues (Emma Stone, Kristen Bell) and finally long sleeves and high necks.
This year the Gala's theme was "Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations," which imagines a fictional conversation between Italian designers Elsa Schiaparelli (famous for collaborating with filmmaker, artist, writer Jean Cocteau and surrealist Salvador Dali) and Miuccia Prada, of Prada and Miu Miu.
