There's so many potential great movies coming out this year that it's hard to keep track – so much so that it's shocking to be reminded that the magnificent-looking Moonrise Kingdom is out in just a few weeks.
Directed by the often-brilliant Wes Anderson (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, recent hit Roald Dahl adaptation Fantastic Mr. Fox), he's gathered up a fantastic cast for his latest including Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand and Jason Schwartzman.
Those experienced pros provide support for a tale of romance between a young boy and girl in 1960s New England, which seems to be filled with the sort of idiosyncratic characters Anderson is known for. This trailer doesn't give too much away, except that it's stunningly well shot and composed, and looks like it should be an absolute delight. Though why would you run away from a camp where Ed Norton's the Scout Master? Just doesn't make sense... Oh, and as with the rest of life, the trailer would benefit from more Bill Murray. (Release date: May 25)
2 Days in New York is the latest film from French delight Julie Delpy, following on from 2 Days in Paris. Her character from that, Marion, is now living in the Big Apple, wondering who on earth would want to be with her. I'm sure I can think of a few potential suitors should she wish to email me her phone number...
Chris Rock co-stars, and those fans of his great stand-up work will be hoping that for once he's chosen to appear in a movie that's actually fitting of those talents. Judging from the trailer, for once we might just be in luck. (Release date: May 18)
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is a long enough title that I've pretty much forgotten what I was going to write once I'd finished typing it. (Assuming it wasn't some brilliant insight into the nature of our mortality, let's just go for obvious.)
This seems a bit like Melancholia put through an indie rom-com filter: an asteroid is about to cause the end of the world, but rather than panic and sink into miserable depression Keira Knightley and Steve Carell's characters go on a kooky road trip.
Not to make this sound too terrible, though – it actually looks like it could be lots of fun. Better than my previous plan for when the apocalypse arrives, which was to go watch Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo while I still had the chance, with nothing more than a giant bag of Wotsits for company. (Release date: TBC)
